Installing your own sod is a project you can enjoy with family and friends. Before you begin, we want to ensure the success of your new sod. Here are a few helpful hints from the pros at Green Acres Sod Farms.
Measure Your Space
The project starts with you measuring your yard. Your measurements will be used to place your sod order, so measure carefully. Most lots these days are not perfect squares or rectangles, but pie-shaped or some funky shape you never learned about in trig class, so we’ll break it down for you in a few simple steps to properly estimate your yard.
Measure A Square Area
You are in luck. All you need to do is take the length in feet multiplied by the width in feet and that will give you the area in square feet. Make sure you subtract the areas that do not need sod, i.e. the driveway or a flower bed.

For example:
Area 1 = 60’ x 25 ’= 1,500 square feet
Area 2 = 15' x 30' =
450 square feet
Your approximate sod total = 1,050 square feet
Measure An Odd Shaped Area
Try to break down your yard into rectangular shapes: follow the step from above on each rectangle, add the totals up on all the small rectangles, and that will give you the total area for your yard.

For example:
Area 1 = 60’ x 25 ’= 1,500 square feet
Area 2 = 20 ’ x 5 ’= 100 square feet
Area 3 = 15 ’ x 5 ’= 75 square feet
Area 4 = 60’ x 25 ’= 1,500 square feet
Your sod total = 3175 square feet
Because these areas are not perfect squares, take your measurement from the mid-point of these areas. This will give you the most accurate measurement (see diagram). Multiply the length by the width. Add all areas together to get your total square footage. Odd shapes and curved landscape edging will result in more trimming and may require additional sod.
